According to a chart in the Wall Street Journal, the number of Americans who are living to 100 years of age has approximately doubled in the last 30 years.  What does that mean for a modern retirement plan?  In the chart below, you're going to want to have more of your money in the things on the top of the page, and less in the thing at the bottom of the page.  Why?
